Los Achiotes, Honduras
*IMPORTANT UPDATE*
Due to travel warnings issued by the U.S. Department of Affairs, EWB-CPP can no longer continue the Los Achiotes Program. We have decided to give the program back to EWB-USA in order to give other chapters, who are able to travel, the chance to make a difference for this community. PROJECT SUMMARY Los Achiotes is a small community with an estimated population of 165 families. They are located near the Omoa metropolis in Cortes, Honduras on a high mountaintop. The present water supply system was constructed more than 20 years ago when the community consisted of only 35 families, and as a result is outdated, deteriorated, and insufficient. The majority of the community is currently lacking access to an adequate water supply. Only twenty percent of the population’s water needs are currently met. The community has a new storage tank with enough capacity for their current demand. Further assessment will be required before any significant plans are made. The overall goal of EWB-CPP was to improve the quality of life for the people of Los Achiotes by supplying them with the means to sustainably meet their prominent needs. |
